Taking B vitamins can mop up excess levels of homocysteine, an amino acid that can attack the arteries, says Food for the Brain, a charity that helps people maintain cognitive function into old age.
Taking omega-3 fats from seafood and supplements along with B vitamins to lower homocysteine levels are essential for brain health, and could eliminate up to 80 percent of dementia cases, says Patrick Holford, the charity’s CEO.
“Half of those over 65 have raised blood homocysteine which is easily lowered with a 10p-a-day B vitamin supplement,” he says. The combination reduces brain shrinkage by an average of 73 percent of those at risk.
It’s also important to restrict sugars and ultra-processed foods. “Diabetes doubles dementia risk and accelerates brain shrinkage,” he added.
The charity offers a simple online test to assess dementia risk on its website: foodforthebrain.org.
